The Underground Lab

Subject: The Underground Lab Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:23 pm

0014 led him through the unlocked wooden doorway, and led him through a long hall to a sealed, secured steel door. She tapped one of the floor tiles with her foot and it sled aside. She reached down, picked up a small access card, and stuck it in the door.

"That way." 0014 pointed into the room. Long metal sheets ran all the way up to the ceiling. Harsh-white fluorescent lightbulbs occasionally cut into the darkness. A long, futuristic table was built into the wall. Several beds lined the opposite wall, each with long leather straps to secure their occupants.

Rinaldo only caught glimpses of where he was going, paying attention to Jenny, careful not to drop her. He stopped by one of the beds, setting 000 on it gently. He patiently waited for 0014 to strap her in. Whenever he was with 0014, he felt like he should always wait for instructions.

"Go on, strap her in. You need to start taking initiative." 0014 gestured to the adjustable restraints. "She'll wake up shortly... I'll sit here and wait for the eventuality. You may leave if you wish."

The Italian nodded, strapping in 000 and decided for himself to make them mildly tight. Jenny didn't have any threatening powers as far as he could remember. He didn't think that 0014 needed his help anymore so he left. "I'll be going now."
He returned to the kitchen, surprised that he remembered the way back.

0014 sat in the revolving chair across the room. The lights did nothing to make her ghastly-pale skin look any healthier. She spun it around so she could face her audience, crossed one leg over the other, and waited patiently. After a few moments she idly hummed what she could remember of a Verdi aria.

Jenny groaned and tried to role over, only to finding she couldn't. Her eyes shot open. The room was darker than she remembered; what had happened. "Wha..." her thoughts were too incoherent to make much sense right now.

"Afternoon, 000." 0014 tried her best to be colloquial. "You got yourself into a spot of trouble in the kitchen, if you'll recall."

"Really..." Her voice slurred a bit, after effects of the sedative. She remembered Cyan punching her, which brought her attention to something clod against her face... ice? Everything came rushing back. "So stupid..."

"What's stupid? I probably saved your life." 0014 leaned on her fist. "Dr. Hirsch and I both. But there's a string attached."

"I meant my jumping in trying to protect that girl. It was pointless. And it landed me here, but that may be due to the fact that you out numbered us.." she said, trying to move her arm. The bonds weren't too tight, but not loose either. Her mind began to clear as she ran through what 0014 had said. "Strings?"

"That's the string. I want to know why you attacked your own comrades." She folded her hands in front of her face and narrowed her eyes. "I believe that's what 004 was referring to when he said 'go gunboat'. What investment do you have in destroying Black Ghost's opposition?" She tried to word her inquiries carefully.

"I don't believe I was ever one of your 'comrades'," Jenny said, annoyed that she was strapped to a bed. It felt to much like being modified. "I have nothing to gain from it. I do it because I should." Why am I answering her questions? Im still loopy, thats all...

"Correction." 0014 bit off the end of her fingernail. "You do it because you are disillusioned and know no other life." She set her hands in her lap and refused to stop staring at her subject. "Had you been given the chance to experience life outside a warmongering corporation, you would feel differently. You have Stockholm Syndrome - the tendency of the hostage to blindly sympathize with the captor." She sat back and kept her stoic face.

"Its true I know no other life, but I'm not sure I get what you mean about Stockholm Syndrome. Wouldn't I have to think I'm on your side for that to be true?" Jenny thought about it to the best of her current ability.

"You were on our side as a child. Before you were captured," 0014 elaborated. "But now that you are in Black Ghost's circle of control, you have been led to believe the organization's way of thinking is correct. Which contradicts your earlier beliefs." She smirked. "The villain is the hero of his own story."

She thought about that. "I don't see how it matters." She muttered. "Am i just here for you to unravel what ever it is you think is wrong with my mind?" She challenged, still watching the ceiling.

"Not unless it's my means to an end. But I like discovering others' flaws." 0014 drummed her fingertips together. "Right now my only goal is to make you not an immediate threat to the well-being of myself and the rest of the well-meaning cyborgs."

The 'misguided' girl had no response to that. "Once I think about it, I cant really justify my actions earlier. I would like to say I felt threatened. But I didn't." she said quietly. "I suppose I acted out of habit." She shrugged despite the awkwardness of the harnesses.

"Everyone has a fight-or-flight reflex. You say you were following yours - I'll believe it when I see you act civil toward Miss Cyan." She tapped her finger to her cheek as she thought aloud. "I'm sure there must be some common ground that you two can find."

Jenny chose not to respond. She could be civil to most people, in her own way. But Cyan's very presence tried her nerves.

Tired of watching the ceiling, Jenny shut her eyes and waited out the silence. The feeling on ice on her cheek had ebbed away, though more likely due to the numbing cold, than melting.

"Now. Are you going to refrain from attacking anyone if I release you and bring you upstairs again?" 0014 pondered her quick recovery from the sedative. Prototype cyborgs must have built up some sort of extraordinary immunities.

Sure, why not? "Possibly. If they attack me first, I plan to protect myself." She warned.

0014 rose from her chair. She paced slowly over to the restrained cyborg and unfastened the leather belts.

"Don't say I never did anything for you. If 004 had his way you'd be here with a strap around your neck." She opened the door with the access card and led her back upstairs.

"I bet he'd the same about you," She muttered rubbing her cheek to melt the remainder of the ice, and followed 0014.

"He would be that way. With me especially." 0014 stood in the doorway. "Maybe it's hard to notice, but 004 dislikes me the most out of any cyborg he's ever met. Perhaps it's the... well, I don't really know what it is."
